vaginal prolapse discomfort

by: Sue on Tue, Jun 26 2007

Hi am 60 and discovered that I had something not right below about five years ago. It turned out that I have a vaginal prolapse I only have one child but had a difficult birth and my GP said this is the reason it has happened. I had urinary problems after the birth but eventually with exercises and generally keeping fit I was fine. The doctor said that going through the menopause didn’ help even though I stll exercise.

My GP referred me to a specialist who told me of three options, applying oestrogen cream internally, pelvic floor exercise or surgery. He discounted surgery because I work in a care-home and have to do hands-on sometimes. I discounted the cream so what was left was the exercises. The exercises did help but it is difficult to discipline yourself to doing five lots of ten pelvic contractions daily.

Now even the exercises are not working as the minute I do any hands-on at work that is strenuous, the prolapse comes down and except for first thing in the morning it never stays up.

I am conscious of it all the time now and it is really uncomfortable but my GP said to keep on with the exercises until I stop work and then she will review the condition.

I totally sympathise with anyone who has the same condition. It doesn’t hurt but it is very uncomfortable and makes me feel as if I want to sit down all the time.
