Urinary infections and hallucinations?

My mother has a diagnosed urinary infection after hip replacement surgery. This is now being treated with antibiotics. However, she has also been suffering from brief interludes of hallucinations, which hospital staff are explaining by saying that it is not unusual to have these when suffering from such infections. I cannot find any connection between the two on the Internet sources and find it hard to see the possible connection. Does anyone have any info or experience with this connection of symptoms?
