Monarc Slings and Your Health

On May 16, 2007, I had a bladder lift surgery referred to as an abdominal sacral colpoplexy. Within two weeks of my hospital release I knew something was wrong. I had abdominal cramping and I felt as if there was something lodged at the top of my vagina. I asked the surgeon what she could have done involving my vagina, as the surgery was done via an incision in my abdomen. The surgeon never did answer my question with a truthful answer. I began requesting my medical records and was being given the “runaround”. At week five I obtained the operating room notes from the hospital. To my astonishment, I discovered that a Monarc polypropylene monofilament mesh sling had been surgically implanted beneath my bladder and attached to the top of my vagina via stitches. It has now been two and a half months, now the cramping is severe. I can feel this implant and the discomfort is almost unbearable. I am trying to find a surgeon who can remove the sling.

This can happen to anyone. To you, your mother, your daughter.

I believe patients should be required to sign a release form specific to any implant. This release would state the manufacturer’s risks. And there are risks! This way no surgeon could implant anything into a patient without their knowledge. If you agree, I would ask that you print out and sign to letter in the comments/response section that immediately follows this page, and mail it to your senator and/or your state representative.
