My stone story- lithotripsy

Here’s my story:

It all started in May when I went to the dr. with symptoms of a UTI Had a ua and they confirmed UTI put me on antibiotics, took them for a week was symptom free for a week and it all returned. Went back, gave me more antibiotics, took them for a week, symptom free for 2 weeks and symptoms return, only worse.

I was in the bathroom all the time. Couldn’t leave. Constant urge to pee, though barely anything was coming out. I didn’t have the stone pain. I didn’t have burning. I just had the urgency to pee. My dr. sent me for a cat scan and found that I had 2 stones in my right kidney and 2 cysts and looked as though I’d already passed 1 stone.

I went to a urologist about a week later and he confirmed what my dr. said and set up an appt. for an IVP x-ray. (You get to do a lovely fleet prep for this). IVP confirmed the same thing, 2 stones in right kidney. So they set me up for lithotripsy. I was completely terrified. Didn’t know what to expect and oh yeah get to do a fleet prep again! So I scoured the internet for lithotripsy stories and could only find horror stories of course!

So I went in for my lithotripsy on 8-18-08. Wasn’t too bad at all. They put me completely under and did their thing and when I awoke I didn’t have much pain at all. I was kind of scared to pee at first but that went off without a hitch also. NO pain. They didn’t have to put a stent in and my stone, (only one left at the time), broke up easily. They sent me home with pain meds and nausea meds but I haven’t needed any of it. I’ve been passing fragments and it hasn’t been painful at all.

All in all I guess I’m one of the lucky ones that has had a good experience and I didn’t have to go through that pain. I hope this story helps anyone else who is scared of lithotripsy cause it isn’t that bad!! I can only hope i don’t have recurring stones and if I do I’m half as lucky as I was this time!

It began with a pain in my left lower back last Saturday evening. I thought maybe it was the wooden chair I was sitting in at a small festival.
