RCC - Stage 2

by: Steve on Thu, May 10 2007

Hi again,
Well, I’m now at the treatment center with my wife, approximately 5 days into the unbelievable odyssey and we now know that she has been Dx’d with Renal Cell Carcinoma. The tumor is massive but there appears, as of this moment, to be no adjacent organs involved. She will have a radical nephrectomy on Monday, including the adrenal gland nearby.

The next gauntlet to get through is the biopsy of the neighboring lymph nodes. If they are impacted, the prognosis is far more grim. If not, far more optimistic. . . Only the surgery and biopsy will tell.

As a spouse, I’m having a much more difficult time, psychologically speaking, with this sudden and shocking turn of events. We had NO warning about this- only some very mild discomfort under her right rib cage and only, frankly, when we were in bed and I had the weight of my arm around her. That was it! Well, her chest x-ray was also unremarkable and we’re at least glad for that. However, the respective visits to the hospital have left us with greater challenges each time. It would be nice to receive some good news in all of this. . .like the lymph nodes are unaffected. We’re told the nephrectomy will last about 3-5 hours and her recovery time in the hospital, about 5-7 days. Stand by. . . we welcome your prayers if anybody out there is reading this.
