To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download Painless urine retention After 4 years of trying to get my husband to go to the doctor (we realized his prostate was enlarged) I finally talked him into it. Upon arriving, he was told to empty his bladder, which he did. They then did a bladder ultrasound and discovered that his bladder was holding 1000 cc of urine (normal is around 300 cc)! He was sent to the hospital immediately for a catheter to be inserted. They drained over 1000 cc of urine right away. The catheter was left in place and the next day they did Urodynamic studies and a prostate biopsy (we were told in the doctor’s office that he thought it was prostate cancer). The prostate biopsy was negative and it was suggested that he have a TURP done (as he so lovingly calls it the “Roto Rooter”). The next day surgery was performed. The Foley catheter was removed and he was sent home with a suprapubic catheter in place. We have been checking his retention levels for a couple of weeks and he is still retaining about 250 cc a day.
