Kidney Failure

by: john V.W. on Mon, Aug 27 2007

I had a tumor removed 2 years ago and had my checkups as the doctor wanted. At my two year check he found another tumor. It was removed and I went into a study group for a new medicine for reaccurring bladder cancer The doctor then reccomended Bcg treatment. ASfter reading about it I then decided to have it since it was a safe treatment. After my weekly treatment I was ok the first few weeks and then I started to feel pretty bad. Not bad enough to tell the nurse to stop the treatments. So I kept going and by the sixth treatment and the last one I had lost about 30 pounds and didn’t have enough strengh to work. This went on for 2 weeks and I didn’t eat or drink much. Being stubbern I wouldn’t let my wife call the doctor. The second week she had enough of me getting worse and called. I had some blood work that day and went in the hospital the next morning after a call from another doctor who my blood work was sent to. My kidneys were more or less completely shut down and potasium level was at 6.8. I didn’t know I was dying until the doctos told me a few days later when I was out of trouble.I guess I was in the 2% that the treatment bothered.I learned a vavuable lesson not to be stuburn if if I don’t feel good to tell the doctor or nurse. I just wanted to get over the treatment and go on a cruise. I made it threw barely but missed our cruise. I now have some damage to my kidneys but I’m alive. If you get these treatyments and don’t feel right have the stop and talk to the doctor.

Funny thing, my father at 56, was diagnosed with the same. i saw the first very small blood particles at 56 also. When my primary referred me to a urologist I went. When he heard my history, he took me to examination room with a cystoscope, and walked back in 10 minutes later and told me ” I was loaded with cancer in my bladder “. Well, hello! [more..]
